CAMP JORDAN IS A GREAT ADVENTURE featuring traditional camp
activities while making friends with other children who understand the
challenges of having diabetes. Established in 1966 by the West Central
Richmond Optimist Club and Dr. William R. Jordan, Camp Jordan continues
to provide a fun and exciting camp experience for children learning to
manage their diabetes, with the supervision of trained counselors,
nurses and doctors.
Camp Fees are listed with
the session. Limited financial assistance is available and based on need.

In addition to the swimming, canoeing, crafts, campfires,
cookouts, games, archery etc., that are standards in the Makemie Woods
programs, education about nutrition and other concerns specific to
diabetes is provided. Bible study and worship are offered as options,
but are not required.

capacities for Camp Jordan must complete a training weekend in June and
undergo background

This two-night, 3-day session is a quick introduction to camp. Campers
will have fun doing traditional camp activities such as campfire, swimming,
boating and crafts, while making friends with other children who have diabetes.
Camp Fee $399
Building on the increased abilities of Jr Hi's, this camp offers a
more intensified experience in building outdoor skills, boating skills,
nature studies and group building, including soaring over the new
Makemie Woods zip lines (weather permitting).
These campers will have opportunities to explore who they want to
become, with the leadership of two counselors for every 12 campers.
Nine day session -- $829
Add to the fun of camp with a paddling adventure on a Virginia River. n addition to the activities listed above, campers will spend time developing necessary canoeing skills in preparation for a well-supervised, overnight river canoe trip (weather permitting). Campers must be able to swim 100 meters without stopping,. This group will be guided by two counselors and the waterfront instructor. Limited to 8 campers.
All registration will be handled through the Makemie Woods
office. Makemie Woods is the camp facility which hosts and
conducts the Camp Jordan program. To receive a brochure and

Only a portion of the expenses of Camp Jordan are covered by the fees charged to campers. Most of the professional services to the campers are donated by volunteer staff members. Medical supplies are donated by manufacturers. Additional assistance in the form of camperships for needy campers is provided by various civic groups and clubs, as well as the Virginia Chapter of the American Diabetes Association.
In addition to the support noted above, we have relied upon
generous contributions from individuals and organizations concerned
